What are Dimensions and Metrics?

In web analytics, every report is made up of dimensions and metrics. Understanding the difference is crucial for building meaningful reports.

  • Dimensions are attributes of your data. They are descriptive characteristics, like the "City" a user is from, the "Device Category" they used (desktop, mobile), or the "Campaign Name" that brought them to your site. They answer the "what," "who," and "where" questions.
  • Metrics are quantitative measurements. They are the numbers in your reports, such as "Sessions," "Pageviews," "Users," or "Conversion Rate." Metrics answer the "how many" and "how often" questions.

Why This Explorer Helps Marketers

Building custom reports or using the Google Analytics API can be challenging because not all dimensions and metrics can be queried together. This is due to their "scope" (User, Session, or Hit-level). For example, you cannot combine a session-level metric like "Bounce Rate" with a hit-level dimension like "Page Title" in the same report. Our explorer and validator help you identify these valid combinations before you build, saving time and preventing errors.
